The Trial of Ubu

The Trial of Ubu By Simon Stephens Directed by Katie Mitchell

ACE Member Rosamund Durnford-Slater of Conference Interpreters UK, reviews the new play at the Hampstead Theatre called "The Trial of Ubu" for other members who are interested in the subject of international show trials and the part played by conference interpreters.

It is a rare occurrence for CIUK to be contacted for advice about interpreting in The Hague but a distinguished colleague, Huboob Al Mudaffer, who worked there, gave the following guidance: "The only thing that comes to mind about The Hague is the tension and the feeling of tremendous responsibility in how you were interpreting the proceedings. It is the only conference in my experience where interpreters worked for ten minutes then gave the mike to a colleague – this just shows you the fevered atmosphere of the whole thing"

Two of our members decided to go along to the Hampstead Theatre on the opening night and our views only concern the aspects for which we have professional expertise i.e. the portrayal of the two interpreters. The performances of Kate Duchene and Nikki Amura-Bird ring true throughout –

twisting their legs nervously before taking over the mike for the first time,

rummaging endlessly in their bags, pens poised to jot down figures for the colleague who is being tested to breaking point by a never-ending list of names and dates, reacting sharply to any tiny movement which disturbs her concentration

The trial is relayed by the interpreters who never once express their own opinion but translate the atrocities – eye witness accounts of cannibalism and other horrors – wide-eyed and deadpan The strain and unbearable tension finally break one of the two interpreters whose is left speechless, her hands vainly searching for the elusive word.

We would like to congratulate Kate and Nikki on such a convincing performance which brings the whole play to life

The play itself naturally deserves a much wider review and touches on the burning question of show trials which is highly topical with the increasing number of high profile prisoners being brought before the specialised tribunals.

We would definitely recommend a visit.

The play runs until 25th February 2012 at the Hampstead Theatre - For bookings and more information click here
